I joined the Air Force ROTC program while pursuing an Electrical Engineering degree at the University of Illinois.  After graduation I became a reserve officer and served a three year active duty term.  I remained in the inactive reserve for several years before being discharged.

My specialty was wire communications.  I received training at Keesler AFB MS and then was stationed at Lincoln AFB, NE and Wheeler AFB, HI in the Strategic Air Command (SAC).  My role was to oversee the primary contractor, the local telephone company, and operate a high security teletype center.

Lessons Learned

Although I enjoyed the work and had my first management job, I was not qualified to fly because of my eye site and as such would never be in the mainstream of the organization.
